Materials for the manufacture of tools should, if possible, have the lowest percentage of scarce elements.

Design and principle of operation of reamers

The reamer structurally consists of 3 elements: neck, working and tail parts. The working part is divided into a guide, cutting and calibrating zone. The main characteristics of the working part are:

  • Groove profile;
  • Width of cylindrical ribbon;
  • Pitch and number of teeth;
  • Cutting angles.

The cutting part is designed for pre-processing and guiding the movement of the tool. The angle of its cone depends on the purpose of the reamer and the type of clamp. Tools designed for use on metal-cutting machines have 12˚-15˚ for processing steel and 3-5˚ for cast iron. For manual processing, this angle is 1-2˚.

The calibration part is intended for finishing the hole. It consists of a cylindrical section (about 75% of the length) and a zone with a reverse taper. It is the cylindrical part that brings the surface of the hole to its final state.

The reverse taper section reduces friction against the bore walls, thereby reducing breakdown. The taper angles and the length of the cylindrical part depend on the type of reamer; for hand tools, the entire working part has a slight taper. This is done due to the fact that the breakdown during manual work is minimal.

A spiral or straight groove on the working part is designed to remove chips from the working area. To avoid self-tightening or jamming of the tool, the grooves are directed opposite to the rotation of the tool. The profile of the grooves depends on the purpose of the reamer.

The guide strip is the upper part of the tool tooth. Its task is to calibrate the hole and smooth its walls. The width of the ribbon directly affects the quality of surface treatment, but at the same time reduces the wear resistance of the tool. The recommended width of this element is 0.08-0.5 mm.

The maximum number of teeth for finishing reaming is 14 pieces. With a larger number, their rigidity decreases and the removal of chips from the working area worsens. An even number of teeth is adopted to facilitate control of the tool size. The tooth pitch is limited by the number and diameter of the tool.

The reamer has the following sharpening. Sharply sharpened cutting edge. The front angle of tooth sharpening is zero, the rear angle is 5-80. A narrow cylindrical strip is also removed along the top of the tool teeth.

The reamer works by translational-rotational movement along the axis of a finished hole, which has a small allowance in diameter. The cutting edges of the tool remove a thin layer of metal, after which a cylindrical strip smoothes and levels the surface of the workpiece. The reverse taper section improves hole accuracy by reducing friction and runout.

Despite the quality of the surface treatment, marks often remain on the walls of the hole perpendicular to the direction of movement of the tool. This is primarily due to the heterogeneity of the metal of the workpiece, but also to the pressing of the cutting edges of the reamer from an uneven load.

Surface cleanliness is achieved through the use of roughing, semi-finishing and finishing tools. The roughness required for using the reamer is 0.32-1.25 microns in Ra, accuracy up to 6-9 grade.

Classification of sweeps

The classification of sweeps is quite complex, due to the fact that this class includes a large number of tools with common tasks. Based on the type of hole, cylindrical and conical reamers can be distinguished. This also includes stepped ones, their task is to process a number of holes of different diameters, with a coaxial arrangement.

The material of the tool, or more precisely its cutting edges: tool steel, carbide tips or insert teeth.

Structurally, reamers can be divided according to the number of teeth, from 4 to 14. According to the type of chip removal grooves: spiral or straight, as well as the presence of a chip breaking groove.

By quality of processing:

  • For cylindrical reamers - quality in cleanliness and class in processing accuracy;
  • For conicals, tolerances for the finish of processing: roughing, semi-finishing and finishing;
  • Reamers with finishing allowance from No. 1 to No. 6, as well as with different tolerance fields.

Separately, it is necessary to highlight adjustable reamers, which can be used to process holes with a reaming range of 1 mm; the main advantage of these reamers is the quality of surface treatment, but, unfortunately, they are short-lived.

But, nevertheless, reamers can be classified according to the type of clamp: machine and manual. The shank of the former has a cylindrical shape or a Morse cone, as well as attachment ones. Manual ones have a square section for a handle-holder.
