The main problems that often arise during the interview process are not lack of experience or training. Even a truly experienced developer can easily stumble while solving some cleverly tailored problem. Therefore, we will not talk about how to write a resume and present yourself favorably. We focus on solving non-trivial problems that involve logical and/or mathematical solutions.

"Toughie"

Task:

There are 2 empty buckets: the first is 5 liters, the second is 3 liters. How can you use them to measure 4 liters of water?

First, fill a five-liter bucket. Next, pour water from it into a three-liter bottle so that 2 liters of water remain in the five-liter bottle (completely filling the three-liter bottle). Task:

There are twenty bottles of pills. In almost all of them, the tablets weigh 1 g, and only in one - 1.1 g. We have precise scales with which we need to determine the jar, each tablet of which weighs 1.1 g. How to do this if you can only weigh 1 time?

Let's abstract ourselves and imagine that we have 2 jars, one of which contains heavier tablets. Even if we put both of them on the scale, we won't know anything. But if we take 1 tablet from one jar, 2 from another and put them on the scales, then the truth will be revealed :) In this case, the weight will be 2.1 or 2.2 (depending on how many tablets we have have taken). This is how we define our jar.

Let's return to the task. You need to remove a different number of tablets from each jar. That is, from the first jar there is 1 tablet, from the second - 2, from the third - 3, and so on. If each tablet weighed 1 g, the total weight would be 210 g. But since the tablets in one of the jars are heavier, the weight will be greater. To determine the required jar, we simply use the formula:

Task:

The book contains N pages, which are numbered in the standard way: from 1 to N. If you add up the number of digits (not the numbers themselves) that are contained in each page number, you get 1095. So how many pages are there in the book?

Each page number has a 1 digit, so there are N 1 digits. But after 9, two-digit numbers begin, and we need to add N-9 digits. The same with three-digit numbers that start after 99: add N-99 digits. Task:

How many integers in the range 1-1000 contain the number 3? You cannot use a computer when counting.

We get another +90 numbers. 1/10 of these 90 also have a three in place of a ten: 33, 133 ... 933. We remove another 9, leaving 81 numbers. The following is simple math:

Here's a more elegant solution to this problem. First, we count how many numbers do not include a triple (9 digits that are not triples are placed in each of the 3 places):

1000 - 729 = 271

Remember that we need to take into account simply the fact that the number contains three. If, for example, it is 33, we do not count the number 2 times. There must be at least one three in the number to count. For example, numbers in the range 300-399 give us 100 numbers at once. We get another 10 from 30-39. The same applies to 130-139, 230-239, etc. A dozen of these numbers were already taken into account when calculating 330-339, so we remove it and get:
