I want to change my profession, where do I start? Profession renaming

The development of technology and technology is primarily aimed at improving and making life easier for each of us. But at the same time, this is the reason for the disappearance of a number of crafts. Disappeared professions are the work that was previously performed by specially trained people, but now does not make sense at all, or is carried out with the help of technology.

Disappearance of professions - is it normal?

If we think logically, it becomes clear that such processes in the structure of professions are quite natural. In no case should one perceive the disappearance of professions as a kind of destructive factor, as a result of which many people become unemployed. It is important to remember that the old professions that have disappeared are necessarily replaced by new specialties, more modern, relevant and in demand. Sometimes there is a direct replacement of the craft, for example, the ancient profession of a coppersmith is reborn into the profession of an electric and gas welder, the once popular job of a newspaper peddler is becoming less and less in demand, and in its place you can put the recently appeared work of the promoter.

The oldest professions that have disappeared

What are the oldest The list of such crafts that have gone into oblivion is quite long. The disappearance of professions is a constant, systematic process that does not attract the attention of the masses. Today we do not think about what professions disappeared several centuries ago, and we may not even be aware of their existence.

List of forgotten professions

  • Pied Piper. One of the terrible problems of the Middle Ages were rats. As you guessed, the people who were called rat-catchers courageously fought against the misfortune. Representatives of this profession, despite all their usefulness, were not very revered in society. Each rat catcher had his own methods of dealing with rodents and tried to advertise himself better in order to beat the competition.
  • ice harvester- this is an extremely difficult and dangerous profession associated with a risk to life. The ice cutters used long saws with a load under water. The ice was cut into longitudinal bars, which were called "boars". Further, these "boars" were delivered to the settlements and were quite a hot commodity.
  • spitter engaged in planting turnips. The name of the profession was given by a specific method of sowing small seeds of this plant.
  • Weepers and wailers trained in the craft of crying since childhood. Not a single ritual action in Russia could do without them. The more plaintively and piercingly the mourner could moan, the higher was the reward for her labors.
  • buffoons- their professional duties were to entertain ordinary people on the streets of cities. The reason for the disappearance of this profession was not technical progress, but the way of society.
  • Alarm clock man- from the name it already becomes clear what the people of this profession were doing. At a time when the alarm clock had not yet been invented, it was also not advisable to be late for work. To do this, a special person knocked on the windows, announcing the arrival of the morning. Sometimes this function was performed by janitors.
  • Executioner- now you will not meet people of this because of their uselessness in the current social system.

Each of these specialties seems strange and absurd to us. It is hard to imagine in the modern world an executioner posting a resume, or a mourner advertising her services. But at one time they were quite sought-after specialists.

What professions did not become in the last century

These crafts are already closer and more familiar to us. They do not seem so absurd, but still do not fit into the realities of modern society.

  • Lamplighter. Remembering the disappeared professions, it is impossible not to pay attention to the people who gave light. Their main task is to light lanterns at dusk.
  • Cab- the person driving It used to be the only way to get to your destination as quickly as possible. In the modern world, an analogue of this profession can be called a driver.
  • Counter- specially trained people who performed complex mathematical calculations using the only "gadget" available at that time - abacus. Mostly women were engaged in this business, as they are more attentive and collected.
  • Reader is a very educational profession. In factories and factories, where people were busy with monotonous work for many hours in a row, there was a man who entertained them by reading newspapers, fiction and poetry. Readers were often hired for money raised by the team.

Disappeared professions in the last 10 years

They say: "life is getting faster." Probably, it is in connection with this that changes in the structure of specialties are becoming more noticeable. It will not be difficult for us to recall a lot of examples of professions disappearing right before our eyes. Disappeared professions in Russia over the past decade:

  • knife grinder- in principle, such a profession still exists, but you will not find its representatives in the afternoon with fire, they have become so rare. Non-blunt knives made of high-quality steel have come into fashion, which can last a long time, and they are much cheaper.
  • Shoeshine - a long time ago they could be seen at every intersection of the main streets of cities and towns. Later shoe shiners did their business mainly in special workshops.

  • telephone operator, telegrapher- it seems that quite recently, receiving telegrams in the mail seemed to be a common thing for us. And how nice it was to hear the voice of the girl-telephone operator, waiting for a connection with the subscriber. Now everything is in the past. The role of cute representatives of these professions can be replaced by a functional smartphone. We managed to find out far from all the disappeared professions. This list is getting longer every decade.

Is it possible to predict something

Analyzing information about which professions disappeared and what events provoked such a disappearance, one can make an assumption about how things will continue in the structure of crafts. The beginning of the extinction of some specialties is so obvious that it is not even necessary to be a specialist to draw the appropriate conclusions.

Jobs that will disappear by 2020

This information is not 100% reliable, but still no one can doubt that these specialties will soon cease to exist. Already now they are losing their former relevance, becoming less in demand, and after 2020, most likely, they will move into the category of "disappeared professions".

  • Postman- a profession doomed to extinction. With the advent of the Internet, newspapers and magazines have lost their former popularity, and we receive 90% of letters by email.
  • Travel agent- information about vacation spots becomes publicly available, planning tourist trips does not require any additional resources and becomes within the power of everyone.
  • Librarian, archivist, document specialist- the organization of electronic databases and electronic archives contributes to the extinction of these professions.
  • copywriter- According to forecasts, soon computer programs will be able to generate articles on various topics themselves, and the number of "keyboard workers" will sharply decrease.
  • Call center operator- already now, many companies offer the possibility of solving problematic issues in automatic mode, controlling the actions of the system through autoresponder commands. This becomes the basis for a sharp reduction in the number of operators.
  • Lecturer. Online courses are an alternative to classroom training. It is because of these innovations in the education system that it can also disappear as a profession.
  • Usher. FROM scanners that read information - this is what will become a replacement for a living person, a specialist in selling and checking tickets.
  • Seamstress- it's hard to believe, but this profession is also in danger of extinction. Soon, manual labor will be needed only to create expensive designer items, and equipment for self-production of clothes at home will become available to everyone.
  • lifter- the mechanisms that ensure the smooth operation of elevators are being improved and automated more and more every year. Soon, specialists will not be needed to control the operation of elevators, machines will do it for them.
  • Stenographer- in the next few years, the work of stenographers and transcribers will be completely replaced by the work of computer programs capable of voice recognition.

Choosing the "right" profession

We have always been taught to choose a profession with the soul. But what if the job that you like and for which there is a craving suddenly becomes unnecessary? It would be a shame if knowledge and professional skills remain unrealized. In order not to get into such a situation, among other factors, it is necessary to consider the prospects of this specialty in the conditions of technological progress. Try to approach the choice of a future profession with all seriousness and consider the issue from different angles.

Summing up

The disappeared professions of the 20th century are a huge list of specific crafts, which in most cases are based on hard physical labor. The need for the existence of such professions has disappeared with the advent of complex technical devices controlled by a person and performing this work instead of him. In the modern world, these disappeared professions may seem strange, surprising or meaningless, but they will forever remain part of our history.

Good afternoon! Elena Melnikova is with you with a two-volume work book, today we’ll talk about how to change a profession.

There are not so many people who chose a profession in early childhood and remain faithful to it all their lives. Before the rest, at least once, the question of the correctness of self-determination arises. What makes people think about it?

1. You have reached the ceiling of professional or career growth.

The former type of activity has ceased to bring satisfaction. The time when you carried out complex assignments of the leadership with burning eyes is long gone. What used to be considered the acquisition of valuable experience has turned into a routine everyday life.

This can happen to anyone who has grown out of beginner's panties and exhausted their potential in this area. At the same time, some people are helped by career advancement, but others are not able to do it either. So, for example, it was in my work with mentally retarded children.

Stability is good, but sometimes it leads to stagnation. From time to time a person needs to change something in his life. Of course, the simplest thing is to rearrange your house or change your wardrobe. But, if this does not bring satisfaction, why not dare to make more global changes? It has been proven by practice that changes in life contribute to getting rid of depression, the activation of thought processes, and therefore, the willingness to perform new tasks increases.

2. Professional burnout caught up with you.

Alas, this is not a whim or a whim, but a serious illness, where sometimes the only way out is to change the field of activity.

When I worked in pedagogy, I was lucky enough to attend a special training to get rid of this condition. It's no secret that it is work with people, especially in a post-industrial society, that wears out the body the most.

The training not only suggested ways to fill life with bright colors, but also tried to solve the main work conflicts that lead to long-term stress. If employees more often received such trainings as a gift from the management (and in our case it was so), the team would be more united, they would feel better, and the turnover would be less.

The most interesting thing is that the head teacher, who went with us to the group and gave the school about 50 years, considered these classes a whim. Still, after all, a real teacher should work selflessly, without complaining about fatigue! One day she went on sick leave and never came back.

3. The current position is dangerous to health.

Working in a hot shop, with an X-ray machine, on night shifts or in the cold should not stretch out for a lifetime, so if your work involves a risk to the body, this is an important reason to think about yourself.

4. Large loads.

If work takes too long, comes home with you, and takes pride of place on your weekend to-do list, consider whether it's worth it.

We work to live, but not vice versa. Of course, a person who is passionate about creativity, for example, a fashion designer or an actor, does not consider this state of affairs to be out of hand, but if constant thoughts about work interfere with family and leisure, it’s probably time to set priorities correctly.

5. Professional deformation.

From the teacher, others expect intrusive advice, from the doctor - excessive caution and a pathological love for cleanliness. It's no secret that work really shapes our habits, needs, and way of thinking, and even determines how we are perceived by loved ones. By changing the type of activity, you will not only change internally, but also show others that your potential is much wider.

6. You have to move to another area (from city to village, from north to south), where your current profession is not in demand.

If possible, study the local labor market in advance so that there is time for retraining.

My friend, a chemist by profession, had experience working in European companies, but by the will of fate she ended up in the Moscow region. Unable to get a job due to frequent travel, she found a student and tutored on the Internet.

7. Approaching unsuitable age.

If your activity has an age limit and retirement is just around the corner, it's time to think about what to do in the future. Yes, many athletes become coaches, but related activities are not always possible. Probably, it's time to remember the dreams of youth or activate your forgotten abilities.

8. The current job is financially unstable and is only getting worse over time.

Over the past decades, the situation on the labor market has changed more than once. Those professions that not so long ago were considered a guarantee of a comfortable existence, suddenly went into oblivion, and new or forgotten old ones ascended to the monetary Olympus.

If you know how to catch a wave - good luck! If it’s not in your nature to keep your nose to the wind all the time, and the salary is less and less like money, connect your relatives, friends and the Internet. As they say, one head is good, but two is better.

9. Change in life values.

Sometimes a person wonders if his work benefits him and society. Often this is due to a change in religious creation. Having gained faith, the bartender may no longer want to prepare alcoholic cocktails, and the dancer may no longer want to entertain the population in nightclubs. Someone has an acute desire to help people or animals. In this case, you can join any volunteer movement and, if it does not tire you, look for yourself in related activities.

10. Finding a dream.

Our dreams are not always associated with professional activities, but it happens. Perhaps in your youth you saw yourself exclusively in a certain area, but then, having stepped on the throat of your own song, you obeyed the wishes of your parents or the requirements of circumstances, and now the memories of unfulfilled hopes haunt you. Or, on the contrary, just now you have realized that your whole life has been preparation for your dream job and now is the time to fulfill your plan.

Are my years my wealth?

If you are now 18 - 20 years old and you consider your employment as a part-time job while studying, you are in luck. But you probably aren't reading this article.

As a rule, the issue of changing a profession worries humanity at a more mature age, when youthful maximalism and adventurism have already been exhausted, and doubts - yours and potential employers - are gaining momentum.

How to decide on changes after 30 years?

For me, the crisis of the thirtieth birthday began even before the onset of this age. I did not like the city where I live, and my position is a teacher in a correctional boarding school. For my birthday, my friend and I went to a remote village to ride horses (this was my first experience), and there I made up my mind to change my place of residence and work. And everything worked out!

Six months later, I had a house in a small town. It became objectively impossible to work in the same place, because at 9 pm, when the shift ended, the transport did not go to my house. Having somehow managed to get by before going on vacation, I began to look for a place closer to home and, of course, no longer in pedagogy.

Everything was decided by a randomly seen ad: "The hotel requires an administrator." Initially, they did not want to hire a teacher in the service sector, but, apparently, the ardent desire to get a different experience, written on my face, played a role. With a day-to-three schedule, I have a lot of time for household chores. But the changes didn't end there.

Increasingly, I began to think about a remote part-time job (oh, how difficult it is to find another in a small town!), And there wasn’t enough creativity in my life, and then I came across an ad from Vasily Blinov. By the way, my early articles were also written on a working computer during working hours (may my former bosses forgive me!)

If the cherished “I want” more and more often reminds of itself, drive away fears. As the novel Dorian Gray says, the best way to overcome temptation is to give in to it. Years from now, we will regret what we didn't do. Well, so that I would not be reproached for advice to throw myself into the pool with my head, let's be a little more careful.

  • Make a wish list

Try for some time to write down everything that does not suit you in the old place and what you would like from the new one. Of course, all aspirations are not destined to come true right away, but you will bring some clarity to the overall picture.

  • Rate yourself

Knowledge, skills, business and personal qualities - all that has been accumulated over the past years. Shy and modest women can ask for help from loved ones. Sometimes it helps to make unexpected choices. My friend Ksenia, having worked for two postgraduate years in a veterinary clinic, was looking for something she liked for a long time, until one day someone, having tried her cake, ordered her another one. Now she has stable orders - and this is without any courses and crusts.

  • Think about future career options

With a list of skills in hand, draw all possible perspectives. Even if it seems to you that the time has come to declare yourself as a fashion designer, include in the list a few related specialties, reserve on the way to the fashion world.

  • If you don’t have any moral strength to do the same thing, and you haven’t decided on a new kind of activity yet, ask friends and relatives what you could do.

Take the placement test again. It is good in such cases to read the newspaper with vacancies from cover to cover (namely, the newspaper, because on the Internet you carry out a thematic search, and in print you may come across an unexpected solution). Once I leafed through it because I had nothing to do and found my sister a job painting watch bezels.

  • Feel the ground

To learn as much as possible about your future profession, attend the necessary events, meet potential colleagues. This will help you avoid unexpected disappointments. So, one of my friends, who passionately dreamed of becoming a guide, signed up for the course, but when she found out that she would have to wash the toilets, she left the first lesson.

  • Get ready now!

Think about what knowledge you need to improve, what skills you lack for your future profession, and where you can get them. In some places, you can limit yourself to seminars and webinars, and sometimes only expensive courses can help. If your current job can help you to improve your skills, do not miss the opportunity!

  • Perhaps a related specialty will help you make a smooth transition, which will give you new skills.
  • Provide yourself with a financial pillow for the time of change, because the salary at first is likely to be less than the previous one.
  • Think about how to explain the field change to the recruiter.

If necessary, attend training sessions to increase self-confidence. Of course, a potential employer will have many questions for you. Including how you will bear the likely decline in income. A woman can always refer to a strong rear and a family-friendly schedule, a man - to savings and confidence in future success. The most important thing is to show enthusiasm for a new occupation and an ardent desire to work in this company.

  • Start compiling and mailing resumes and do not shy away from word of mouth!

We do not always have a financial cushion for sharp jumps, but it is definitely worth a try. You can always enroll in courses, take online training or look for a part-time job. By the way, if you really want something, the Universe sends help: the right people come across on the way, “random” ads on the Internet, etc. It’s never too late!

Not all of us are by nature great combinators, capable of changing our own reality every second. More often than not, we need to think carefully before making a decision. Changing a profession, especially in adulthood, is a serious and responsible step, but this does not mean that it is not worth stepping.

What opportunities will open up after the long-awaited changes?

Pleasant bonuses for the brave

  • Expansion of own competence

Previously, you skillfully combined debit with credit, and then your soul called you into the world of cosmetics, and now you already know so much about skin care. Of course, knowledge can be obtained at webinars and courses, but their perfect development is always associated with practice.

  • Acquisition of new qualities of character

If earlier you lacked the ability to stop a galloping horse, then, having settled down as a groom, you will not learn such a thing.

  • New acquaintances (especially for creative professions)

And this is not only a benefit, but, first of all, communication and fresh interests.

  • Horizon expansion

A person who has worked in one place all his life is probably a good specialist. But just think how much new you will learn when, along with a change in profession, you gain knowledge, acquaintances and, perhaps, a couple more hobbies!

  • Self-realization

With all my heart I wish you that it does not end there, but only begins!

  • Increase self-esteem

Even if the new position is not related to career growth, “I did it” is worthy of respect in itself. This is something you can and should be proud of.

  • Inspiration

How sad the creative soul was without fresh knowledge, skills and impressions! And finally they happened! Even if at first glance the work does not encourage creativity, the true creator will find inspiration everywhere. At least in access to a service computer or spray gun:p

  • Change in psychological status (age, self-awareness)

If it seems to you that addressing by name and patronymic adds a few extra years, or, on the contrary, the options “Helen” and “girl” automatically turn you into an eternal youth, perhaps your position is at odds with your sense of self.

Remote work is the ideal case when you yourself determine the style of addressing yourself. Form an image using a sonorous login or, on the contrary, hide behind a meaningless nickname - you choose. And the most important thing here is the assessment of your personality only according to the results of work.

  • New chart

Perhaps not the most familiar and not ideally comfortable, but you can find pluses in everything.

It is easier to plan your daily routine on your own when working remotely. If it is not related to calling or live broadcasting, no one will forbid you to work at night or jump up with the first roosters.

  • A dream come true

Perhaps the most pleasant bonus. It remains only to wish that dreams do not end there.

And, finally, any changes in life entail new twists and turns. The current can swirl as soon as you enter it. Sometimes the course of events is completely unpredictable. Therefore, I do not undertake to continue this paragraph :p

There are many reasons for wanting to change jobs. Now we will present to your attention the most significant of them.

  1. Low salary. At the moment when we get a job, we hope that wages will rise as quickly as prices rise. But there are situations when the company's business is not going very well or the bosses are simply not interested in the wishes of their subordinates. In this case, you work practically for nothing and are well aware that your work is not paid properly.
  2. Lack of career growth. If you are a careerist by nature, but for many years your work remains unnoticed by anyone, and everyone is promoted up the career ladder, but not you, then this is a reason to change your current job.
  3. Unacceptable schedule. Each company has its own work schedule. Somewhere night shifts are established, somewhere they force workers to go out on holidays and weekends, and there are professions that provide for irregular working hours. It happens that a person was satisfied with his schedule until a certain period, but after something changed in life, it became problematic to work in this position. For example, women without children arrange night shifts, but with the advent of babies, they simply have no one to leave them at night.
  4. Unacceptable working conditions. People of some professions in the course of their work deal with dangerous and harmful working conditions. These factors negatively affect the state of the employee and the health of the whole organism as a whole.
  5. Change of leadership. There are situations when the management changes at the enterprise and you do not find a common language with the new boss. He not only finds fault, but also tries to survive you from his familiar place.
  6. Unhealthy team atmosphere. If you have strained relationships with colleagues, then this greatly interferes with the normal performance of your job duties. You can emerge victorious from any war, but if you do not want to fight with the team, then dismissal may be an alternative.
  7. Willingness and ability to do other activities. A person should do only what he really likes. If at some time he did work that he does not like, then at the slightest opportunity you need to change your life.

Each person has their own reasons for changing jobs, but before you take a responsible step and write a letter of resignation, you should think it over a hundred times and not do anything on emotions.

Things to consider before changing jobs

At the moment when a person has a job, it seems that there are many vacancies around with higher salaries and better working conditions. In reality, when a person really starts looking for a new job, he is faced with the fact that he is not suitable for some organizations as a specialist, and, perhaps, the working conditions in some companies do not suit the employee himself. And it turns out that a person quit his old job, but cannot find a new one.

And there are cases when the employee returns to the old place of work. We do not know how our lives will turn out, and we offer you to use the recommendations that may help you in the future.

  • Do not quit until you have found a new job and received confirmation that you are really hired.
Printed publications are full of ads for a wide variety of vacancies, but this does not mean that you will be taken to the first company you like.
  • Do not tell others about your plans.
There may be many envious or ill-wishers around you. With their help, rumors about your possible departure can reach the authorities, and they can make your stay at the workplace unbearable. And not the fact that you still leave.
  • Leave "beautiful".
Even if among your colleagues there are people to whom you have long wanted to express everything that you think about them, you should not do this. The earth is round and it is not known what awaits all of us tomorrow, perhaps someday you still decide to return.
  • Don't "burn bridges".
After you still decide to write a letter of resignation, try to finish all the work and transfer them to your successor. Maintain a good relationship with your superiors, because they still have to give you a letter of recommendation for a new job.
  • Don't speak badly about your previous job.
If you will "pouring dirt" on former colleagues or boss, then this will only aggravate your precarious position in the new team. Try to correctly and tactfully answer questions related to the old place of work.

How to change jobs: the first steps

People who find themselves on the verge of change are very often lost and do not know where to start and how to act correctly. Any changes in life are accompanied by experiences, and in some cases, nervous shocks.

If you are hungry for change, but do not know where to start, we suggest using the instructions we have compiled.

  1. Decide for yourself if you like your profession . Perhaps you have a humanitarian mindset, but due to some circumstances you have to work as an accountant. In this case, most likely you just chose the wrong profession for yourself.
  2. Think about what you would like to do . If you are satisfied with your profession, but the current team is hated, just change your job. But if you are not satisfied with your specialty, then it is time to change not only the place, but also the occupation. Think about what you do best and bring you the most pleasure.
  3. Prepare the ground for future change . You can start looking at newspapers or specialized sites with job offers, call the specified phone number and arrange interviews.

If we are talking about starting your own business, then you need to draw up a business plan and find start-up capital. Read:

  1. Go to active job search . At this stage, we suggest that you start attending interviews. It can take more than one month to find a new job, so you should not talk about your plans at your current workplace.
  2. Inform management and staff of your imminent departure . When you find a new job, or make the final decision to start your own business, you can let everyone know that you are leaving.
  3. Write a statement . Under current law, after filing a letter of resignation, an employee must work for 14 days. He may not work out this period if he has a replacement and the boss releases the resigning without working off.

But most often you can find a situation where the management does not want to let go of valuable employees and defiantly tears up all statements. In this case, you need to send a letter of resignation by registered mail. Upon receipt, which, the responsible person will be required to sign for it and register it properly.

  1. Finish all things and hand them over to the receiver . We do not recommend spoiling relationships with anyone, so we recommend that you complete all the work you have started, put your papers in order and transfer all the affairs to the person who will perform your duties.
  2. On the last day, say goodbye to the whole team and say that it was a pleasure to work with them. (even if you don't think so).

How to change jobs at 40?

Young people think that after 30 years old age begins. But when they turn 40, they continue to feel young.

It is at the age of 40 that people realize that half their lives have been lived, and there is nothing special to remember. At this point, they begin to mope and become depressed. The crisis of 40 years is actively coming. Psychologists often help to get out of this state, who, according to the stories of clients, understand that they are unhappy, because they do unloved work.

But not all people who have exchanged their fifth decade decide on such cardinal changes as changing jobs. Many are satisfied with stability, a familiar team and do not let go of the fear of the unknown.

If you consider yourself to this category of people, we advise you to think about the fact that there is only one life and you should not live it not the way you want, but the way you need to.

If you have a special education, a long work history, unique experience, etc., we recommend that you try to find a job that you like.

In our country, you can often find a situation where in Soviet times, due to a lack of personnel, people were hired for various specialties immediately after graduating from 11 classes. Today, only people with higher education can apply for such places. Nevertheless, no one kicks out those “old” workers, and they successfully fulfill their duties.

But if such a person with experience, but without education, decides to change his job, then he is unlikely to succeed, due to the lack of a diploma.

Therefore, before deciding to change your profession after 40, weigh all the pros and cons very well. If you can’t leave your old job, we advise you to find yourself a hobby with which you may be able to earn extra money.

The main thing is not to get hung up on an unloved job, but to find your outlet. For example, knit things for your grandchildren, bake goodies for children, or devote yourself to loved ones.

How to change jobs for a woman

For some, changing jobs is easy enough, while for others, there are many obstacles along the way. In order to have as little trouble as possible, we advise you to use our recommendations.

  • Avoid impulsive decisions, let yourself cool down before doing anything.
  • Learn how to write a good resume.
  • Use your contacts to find future work. Often it is acquaintances who help to find a new job.
  • Go to all interviews where you are invited, and do not be discouraged if you are rejected. Thus, you get invaluable experience of communication with employers.
  • Change jobs no more than once every 2 years. Too frequent change of work speaks of your frivolity.
  • Before you get a new job, talk to the team at the job you want to get. If you completely change your profession, then experienced people will tell you about all the advantages and disadvantages of this specialty.
  • If possible, train for a few days before leaving your old position. So you will learn more about the responsibilities that will be assigned to you.
  • Consult with relatives.

Conclusion

Life is too short to do what you don't like. The hardest thing about changing jobs is taking the first step. Calculate all the pros and cons of the present and future work, compare the results and start acting.

If you do everything right, then your life will change beyond recognition, and you will forget about depression and bad mood.

A few decades ago, when the Country of Soviets reigned in the country, a profession was chosen once and for all. Since then, life has changed dramatically: new professions, new opportunities for training and employment have appeared. A civilized labor market has been formed. And if earlier people were afraid to even think about changing their profession in adulthood, now they are not only thinking, but also changing.

People who have changed jobs

Olga, 45 years old: “At the age of 40, I realized that my profession as a seamstress ceased to suit me. I went to medical school and trained as a nurse. It was a little unusual to study in a group with my daughter's age, but still I learned. I quickly found a job at a government eye clinic. Then a doctor who opened a private clinic called me to his place. Already from there I took advanced training courses, and now I can not only conduct physiotherapy, but also select glasses. I am fulfilled and happy!”

Marina, 50 years old: “All my life I have been a housewife. When the children were small, I was fine with it. But when the children “scattered” to their families, I felt empty. That's when I decided to take a career path. It turned out that the profession of a landscape designer suits me. I passed the necessary courses, through my acquaintances I found the first customers. Now I earn no worse than my husband and I feel an unprecedented surge of strength!”

Andrey, 47 years old: “I was a successful top manager, but because of the crisis I was laid off. I did not grieve for a long time and went to work in a taxi. This work inspired me to start my blog. In one social network, I maintain a page where I write notes about my new work, and, to my surprise, it has become very popular, more than 6,000 people have subscribed to it.”

Today, such stories are not uncommon. Many people, having reached a certain age limit, understand that they need changes. Some realize that they are “burned out” in their current profession, others realize that they initially chose the wrong field of activity. Some people are pushed to professional changes by life circumstances. But not everyone can dare to change. Even if a person really wants to change his profession, he is prevented by the fear of change. How to deal with it?

How to decide to change?

Psychologists have developed a special formula that is designed to help people decide on changes in their lives. This formula is called the Glaitcher formula or simply the change formula:

FROM< Н*В*Ш

Resistance to change< Неудовлетворенность*Видение будущего*Шаги

C - resistance to change. It is the main stumbling block. If the resistance is very strong, it is very difficult to decide on changes, almost impossible.

When a person wants to change his profession, he has many fears:

  1. loss of professional competence;
  2. a decline in the standard of living;
  3. ridicule of others;
  4. alienation of relatives;
  5. the possibility of failure.

On the other side of the scale is your dissatisfaction and desire for change:

N - dissatisfaction with the current situation. State what specifically you don't like about your job. This is where you need to assess your condition. Maybe you're just tired and need another vacation? Or is it worth picking up an exciting hobby that will dispel your professional longing? Sometimes it’s worth taking a good rest in order to realize whether it’s really time for you to change your profession or is it just fatigue. If after returning from vacation you are still unhappy with your job, then it's time to change something.

B - vision of the future. In order to successfully step into a new future, you need to clearly imagine it. Try to see yourself clearly in a year. How do you see yourself? What do you want to do? Imagine a company in which you would like to work, mentally step into their team, think about whether you can.

At this stage, you can take a career guidance test. Tests like this are a good way to look at yourself from the outside. Understand what you have the ability to, where you can be useful.

Try to remember what you dreamed about as a child. Maybe it's time for a childhood dream to come true?

Ш - the first steps towards change. Once you understand WHAT you want, you need to learn HOW to do it. You need to outline specific steps to fulfill your goal. For example, choose an educational institution to study a new profession, or look for courses and seminars on the Internet. If you are planning to go into your own business, then at this stage you need to draw up a detailed business plan. If at the previous stage it was necessary to imagine how you see yourself in a year, now you need to think about what you can do to bring this SELF to life.

Using the formula of change, you can give a name to your fear, and the named fear loses its strength, understand your desires and aspirations, outline a plan for further action. It doesn't matter at what age you decide to change, restrictions are a thing of the past. The main thing is to believe in yourself, not be afraid to learn new things and tune in to success!

Over the years, our priorities have changed. At the age of 20, we only dream of some specialty, and at 35, the position that we have been going for so long ceases to bring pleasure. And now you are already browsing job sites and asking yourself the question: is it possible to start all over from the beginning in the middle of a career path?

An easy way is to look for yourself in related fields. For example, from a journalist to retrain into a PR manager or from the accounting department to go into audit. Existing experience, skills and connections will be useful in a new job, while new career opportunities will open up for you. It is more difficult if you decide to completely change your qualifications, for example, from a lawyer to become a florist. In such a scenario, difficulties cannot be avoided.

Relatives against?

Anastasia made a career as a lawyer for 8 years. Having a good position and a solid salary, she became interested in web design. At first she mastered Photoshop and Illustrator as a hobby, and then she realized that she liked studying the work of large design studios and drawing her own layouts much more than controlling contracts and conducting legal consultations. Anastasia graduated from web design courses, the first clients appeared - and she was categorically running out of time. “It became clear that we had to choose,” she says, “either to continue her legal career, or to leave and start from scratch. The problem is my parents. Firstly, my financial assistance is a large amount in their budget. I doubt that I will be able to help them by quitting, as earnings will definitely decrease. Secondly, dad is very sharply opposed to me giving up my established career and the specialty that I studied at the university. So I can't make up my mind."

In Russia, it is customary to work in one place for a long time. This stereotype is especially strong among the older generation: our parents brag about the fact that they have only one or two jobs in their workforce. It is not surprising that they find it difficult to understand people who decide to change not just their place of work, but the profession as a whole.

In principle, it is difficult to decide on changes, reminds psychologist, arts therapist, coach Uliana Skornyakova: “Of course, there is such a thing as someone else's opinion - colleagues, mothers, aunts, grandmothers at the entrance. At some point, a critical point comes when you need to ask yourself the question: what, in fact, do I really want? What is important and valuable to me? Am I satisfied with the life I'm living? Honest answers to these questions will help you figure out whether to change your life. It may well turn out that you live to be comfortable for your colleagues, mother, sister, aunt and grandmothers at the entrance, and this suits you perfectly. Then there is nothing to complain about, and the dream to change the type of activity is most likely fake. Another thing is if you are completely tired of living someone else's life and are determined to stop forcing yourself and start a life for yourself, for your own pleasure.

HR managers will react with distrust?

After graduating from the institute, Evgeny worked for five years in the social department of a state institution, was engaged in youth programs and educational projects. After five years, he realized that he did not want to grow up in this area and become an official. After retiring, Evgeny entered the Higher School of Economics for an annual program in digital management. Parents helped pay for the education. Eugene immediately began looking for a job in the digital field. “It wasn't easy,” he says, “because I didn't have any experience in this area, just a curiosity and a basic knowledge of HTML. Employers were also suspicious of my civil service experience and the fact that I decided to move from this area to digital. It only helped me that I applied for starting positions and accepted the position of assistant.

HR-managers can relate to a change of profession in different ways. If a person realizes why he is leaving, what he will get at the end, what are the pros and cons, then this is normal and will not cause suspicion, Marina Nichiporenko, a senior consultant at Wyser Russia, believes. “If a person runs away from problems without realizing himself in one area, tries to find a more comfortable and easier environment - here, of course, you experience a certain distrust: after all, there is no guarantee that a fiasco will not befall him in a new area.” Other recruiters, on the contrary, may perceive your career turn with enthusiasm, because you can decide to change a profession or field of activity only if you have really strong motivation. This is what Svetlana Antonova, head of the personnel department of Arasar LLC, thinks: “Such a person understands what kind of business he will like. Such people bring a new look at established processes to the company, work with soul, infect with their passion and inspire colleagues. They certainly won't inspire confidence. The question will be only in accordance with the candidate's position.

HR managers are well aware of situations when a person is disappointed in his profession. People understand that they have become unclaimed in a crisis or with the development of technology, and set themselves the goal of getting a new specialty, explains Marta Godzina, a consultant for the Digital & Media direction of the recruiting company Hays. “This approach commands respect,” she adds. “But if a person is in constant search of himself and is trying to change his profession for the fifth time in a few years, then this is already a “bell”.

Remember that if you were invited for an interview, it means that you are already being considered as a potential employee. Help recruiters finally make sure of this.

Will the salary go down?

If you change profession, most likely, at first the salary level will drop a lot. You will have to start from the position of an intern or assistant, warns Stanislav Korolkov, head of the Unibrains training center: “The main thing is not to think that this is a regression. Remind yourself that you came to this position for experience. And the next step will be more confident, and the position will be higher.” Perhaps this next step will happen sooner than you think. According to Unibrains experience, the fastest growth occurs in the field of IT: here, if a beginner copes with all the tasks and strives to gain even more knowledge, he can grow into a line specialist in an average of 3-6 months.

Prepare for a decrease in income in advance. Well, if you have savings, if not, weigh your needs and possibilities, Uliana Skornyakova advises. “For example, you have a mortgage, children, or you just like to take a bath of expensive champagne once every two days. Think about what you need to spend and what you can't refuse - this will help you figure out how much money you really need, she continues. - Determine after what time a new profession will bring you the necessary income, and what needs to be done to increase it. When there is a clear plan to achieve the goal, fears and uncertainty will reduce the degree.

A great option is to combine the desired activity with the current job. This way you will gain experience, connections and customers in a new area, while maintaining your usual level of income. This will make the transition to a new specialty less painful.

Will you have to start from scratch?

The only way to advance in a new profession as quickly as possible is to study and upgrade skills. Look for schools and courses in your chosen specialty that immediately employ their graduates. Start building a portfolio as early as possible in your studies. Feel free to show your work.

The fact that a change of profession is downshifting is actually a myth, Uliana Skornyakova believes. “I think that understanding what you really want to do gives you incredible enthusiasm and a thirst for activities that will lead to raises and wage growth in a short time,” she is sure.

Stanislav Korolkov is also sure that the main thing is the desire to achieve results. “Once a girl with many years of experience in consulting and finance came to Unibrains,” says Stanislav. - However, she never intersected with the web sphere and did not even know the basics, for example, how to clear cookies and enable incognito mode in the browser. We hesitated whether to take her to the courses. But she had a great desire to start working in the digital field. She independently prepared for the entrance test, entered the course, and showed one of the best results at the final exam. Now she is successfully working in a new specialty - she is engaged in web analytics.

Doubt is okay!

If you want to change your career path, but doubt - doubt it! This is normal, Uliana Skornyakova is sure: “It is doubts that can rock you emotionally to the decisive step. Use this energy to change, not to paint yourself into a corner."
